Hey folks, so here’s a quick update on what’s been going on in the last few weeks.
UCON is back this weekend, thanks to all the hard work by the Genshiken anime club! For those of you who don’t know what UCON’s about, check out my coverage of last year’s event. Details are on the event page on Facebook.
Photos updated!
After a hearty breakfast with the Legion Ink crowd Saturday morning, we all headed off to UCON 2014. I attended the first UCON in 2013 and was pretty impressed by what the UCT anime club Genshiken had managed to put together. It was nowhere near the level of any international con (after all it was just a student event) but it was a pretty good start and a good foundation to build upon.

UCON is an anime and gaming convention that was started in 2013 by UCT’s anime (and general geek club) Genshiken. I covered the 2013 event, and overall ended up having a pretty good time, even though it did have a couple of minor issues. The event itself was successful enough that Genshiken was given the go ahead to host another event this year.
The 2014 event is aiming to be bigger (it’s being moved to the larger UCT sports center) and better (more vendors, more gaming, more cosplay, more workshops, etc), and I’m very interested to see if the organisers can add a bit more of a professional touch to this year’s event. UCON 2013, as cool as it was, was a little bit rough around the edges. With a bit more work (and a bit more budget), this event could become one of THE events to attend if you’re a geek in Cape Town. We shall see how things turn out for UCON 2014.
UCON will be hosted on the 29th and 30th of March, and tickets will set you back R50 for a standard 2 day pass. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or from any of the following vendors:
For more information be sure to check out the UCON website or the Facebook event.
By the time you read this, the first ever anime and gaming convention to be hosted by UCT’s anime and gaming club, Genshiken, will be over. The event was a success, but it had a few minor problems.

Joburg has had the Icon Gaming and Comics convention for a while, and while we do have Readers Den’s awesome Free Comic Book Day event, Cape Town has never had an event that has specifically tried to cater for all geeky tastes right from the start.
