Geek Out! Free Comic Book Day 2015 at Readers Den Cape Town (Updated with more photos and videos)

Readers Den gearing up for Free Comic Book Day 2015!
When one of my best friends, Banzai Bob, told me he was getting married the weekend of Free Comic Book Day, my heart skipped a beat. I almost thought he’d made the mistake of scheduling his wedding during the one major event we both look forward to every year. He reassured me shortly after that he since it was a long weekend, he was actually getting married on the Thursday before the event. I thought to myself, “Thank goodness!” I really didn’t know how I was going to carry all the comics I’d have to buy for both of us.

The Walking Dead – McFarlane 5″ Daryl Dixon with Motorcycle Review – Guest post by BanzaiBoB
My second ever review for Geek Ink was McFarlane’s Merle Dixon figure. Now it’s time for part two of the act: Merle’s younger brother, Daryl. Played by Norman Reedus, Daryl was created for the TV show, never appearing in the original comics (although occasionally you hear mumbles that he might make an appearance at some point). He rapidly became a fan favourite and a figure was released in the very first series of 5” Walking Dead figures. Sadly, it was marred by an awkward pose and the almost non-existent articulation that characterized the early figures. This didn’t stop it selling out almost immediately, pushing its price through the roof on the secondary market. I wasn’t able to get one, and actually I’m fine with that, because Daryl Dixon 2.0 is a fantastic figure, superior in every way to the first one.
Game of Thrones – Funko 6″ Ned Stark Review – a guest post by BanzaiBoB
Eddard Stark (Ned to his friends) is the head of the Starks of Winterfell and Lord of the North. For a time he is Hand of the King to his friend Robert Baratheon, but falls foul of the Lanisters after Robert is killed in an accident and the Queen’s son from an incestuous relationship – the nasty little turd Joffrey – ascends to the throne. That he came to a sticky end in the first season of the TV adaption should be a surprise to exactly no-one, what with the somewhat unfortunately type-cast Sean Bean having been given the role.

Mechawhales – Deep Fried Figures 5″ Sperm Whale Infantry Review – a guest post by BanzaiBoB
The Mechawhale universe is an original concept created by German graphic designer, Hauke Scheer. Set in a world where whales have gained psychic powers, the discovery of a hostile alien race forces the whales to undergo enhancement procedures so they can fight in enormous mech suits.
Hauke created a number of digital sketches for different whale fighting suits, ranging from smaller orca and narwhal suits, to a massive blue whale operated tank. Sadly, only the sperm whale infantry suit (aka The Whalehammer) made it into production. (Check out his art and other figure designs here: http://hauke3000.deviantart.com/).
Dawn of the Dead – Neca 7″ Hare Krishna Zombie Review – a guest post by BanzaiBoB
For some reason, I find Hare Krishnas utterly hilarious. I have also become increasingly obsessed with zombies over the last few years. It should therefore come as no surprise that a zombie Hare Krishna fills me with utter glee!
