I started attending Free Comic Book Day at Readers Den in 2008 and even though the queues keep on getting longer and longer, the event just keeps on getting better and better.

Readers Den gearing up for Free Comic Book Day 2015!

When one of my best friends, Banzai Bob, told me he was getting married the weekend of Free Comic Book Day, my heart skipped a beat. I almost thought he’d made the mistake of scheduling his wedding during the one major event we both look forward to every year. He reassured me shortly after that he since it was a long weekend, he was actually getting married on the Thursday before the event. I thought to myself, “Thank goodness!” I really didn’t know how I was going to carry all the comics I’d have to buy for both of us.

Geek Out! Free Comic Book Day 2014 @ Readers Den: A geek-stravaganza!

The FCBD event hosted by Readers Den is one of the few major events I have on my calendar, and this year did not disappoint.

Geek Out! Free Comic Book Day 2013 at Reader’s Den!

I had planned to vlog about FCBD 2013, but unfortunately the sheer craziness of the whole thing and some nasty gremlins that got into my footage prevented that idea from becoming a reality. So instead I put together a small promo video highlighting what FCBD is like for us Cape Town people. It’s no Comic-con (yet) but the event saw massive growth this year: 2012 saw approximately 1000 people in attendance, and the 2013 event saw almost 2000 people pop by to check it out! 4000 people next year? Who knows?

Geek Out! Free Comic Book Day 2013 is almost upon us!

If you’re from Cape Town, be sure to pop by Readers Den in Claremont tomorrow for Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)! There’s going to be a ton of awesome stuff going on, so if you’re into geek culture at all then be sure to check it out. You can get the full details over at their website.

Geek Out! Like a fine wine, it just keeps on getting better – Free Comic Book Day 2012

I lost myself in a comic/(medical) drug induced frenzy in the early hours, and was only after my sanity returned that I thought to take some photos for this post. Shortly after I moved to Cape Town, I sought out a small comic book store my brother had taken me to when I first visited 12 years ago. It had since changed location, but thankfully Reader’s Den was still as awesome as I remembered it. It was shortly after my rediscovery of Reader’s Den that I found out about Free Comic Book Day (FCBD). An event that was originally created to promote comics around the world,  it has also become a day for fans and creators to get together and have an awesome time. I have attended FCBD at Readers Den for the last five years, and it amazes me how each year it just keeps on getting better and better.
